Doorway Speller

Practise spelling using the well proven method, "Look, Say, Cover, Write and Check". Users enter text using their keyboard or the on-screen keyboard. The word database includes lists graded at levels A - D of the Scottish 5 -14 Curriculum and lists organised by topic. Scottish Borders Council users can see how to add their own lists on the news page.

First Words
Practise spelling simple words. Choose from 60 words targeted at level A of the Scottish 5 - 14 Curriculum. Users look at the image and listen to the word being said before spelling, using their keyboard or the on-screen keyboard.

First Sounds
Identify the first sounds in words. Users see and hear the word before attempting to pick the starting sound using the keyboard. Pressing the keyboard allows the user to hear the letters and diagraphs. Choose from 56 words, starting with vowels, consonants and the digraphs "ch", "th" and "sh".

First Blends

Practise spelling short words containing blends, such as 'br' and digraphs, such as 'ai'. There are 60 words to choose from, each with its own image and speech support. On-screen keyboard and scanning options are available.

Letter and Number Formation

This activity provides a good model for learners starting to write letters and numbers. Clear animations show the correct starting points and proper strokes. Use the mouse, touch screen or interactive whiteboard to follow or "write over" the letter as it is formed. Letter Formation uses the Jotter Primary font, which appears throughout the Doorway Online activities. Alternative versions of the letters 'f' and 'k' are available.

About Time

Three activities to develop the concept of time. Time passing supports the discussion of the passage of time during a day. Change the clock to see events such as the school bus arriving in the morning and the children playing at break. Setting the clock and What time is it? focus on the skill of telling the time. All activities can be set to intervals of 1 hour, 15 minutes, 5 minutes or 1 minute. Time can be shown in analogue or digital clock.

Cashing In
Practise selecting coins to make specific sums of money. Levels range from working within 10p to working within £2. Click on the coins in the purse or the hand to add or remove coins. It is possible to show or hide a running total.

Count Me In

Activities to familiarise learners with numbers to 20, 50 and 100 and the stations of the times tables up to 10. Hear the Number and Find the Number are speech supported activities that reinforce learners' understanding of two digit numbers and their relationships. In Times Tables Stations learners count on to build the patterns that underpin the times tables.

Number Table
Practise sequencing numbers by placing counters on a table. Users are shown a complete number table, then after some numbers are removed, the user fills in the blanks using counters. The number tables can be set to specific ranges including: 1-10, 1-20, 1-50 and 1-100.

Till We Meet Again

Play the shopkeeper as you practice giving change for items costing from 20p to £10. Three options give varying levels of support on the till screen. Price + Change shows the cost of the item as well as how much change to give, Shopkeeper Method displays the cost of the item, the change in hand and the total of the two. The Price option shows only the price of the item and user must calculate the change.

Up to 10
Doorway Up to 10 allows users to practise the essential skill of counting items within the range 1-10. Numbers are spoken as you count. Users can choose to use structured patterns for the numbers 1-10. This will enhance their ability to recognise number patterns. This application is compatible with the commonly used structured early maths schemes.

A complete touch typing course suitable for all ages. Exercises start with the home keys and progress to typing sentences. Customisable options allow this activity to be used by learners with a visual impairment.

Talking Text Type

This activity has been specifically designed for those users with a visual impairment who also need speech feedback to access the exercises. When using the Practice Keyboard with Speech, the name of the key pressed is spoken. In the Talking Exercises, the user is prompted by speech to type each letter and hears spoken feedback for each key pressed.

Pelmanism

Classic pelmanism game with up to 18 cards and a range of 24 different images with speech support. Vary the difficulty by choosing between 6 and 18 cards. One and two switch scanning is supported.

Same or Different
Two speech supported activites that explore the concept of the same and different. In Two the Same the user matches two cards that are identical. In Odd One Out the user must find the one card that is different. The number of cards in each activity can be changed. One and two switch scanning is supported.
